Background
When he was 17 Tholanen Walkas Fletcher forsook his noble heritage, took on the name “Fletch,” and joined a merchant vessel to prove himself in the world. Since then he has had no contact with the Fletcher family, nor would he openly admit his noble origins as he believes it to be abuse of power to use his birthright to impress or gain special favor. He has spent 5 years working on various ships, and while his training as a Paladin is never far from his mind, nor does he take the sanctimonious stance of many of his peers. Paladins, he believes, should work for the betterment of the less fortunate, never punishing those who break the law from desperation or need. Instead, a paladin is called upon to break the hold of oppressors and tyrants over their subjects. Fletch also believes that making his own fortune is the only way to “deserve” his birthright, and that by amassing wealth and power for himself he will be better able to help his subjects when he returns to claim his family lands. His own wealth, as he sees it, will better his family’s position, and therefore better every person his family is responsible.

None of this, however, is known to the public. Fletch is unassuming, wearing the cheap, light armor and weapons of a sailor. He frequently takes his shore leave with other sailors, never disdaining their pastimes or vices. While his behavior is hardly “typical” of a paladin, and many of the skills and fighting tricks he learned aboard ship do not reflect what the church would see as a “shining example” of knighthood, Fletch believes that his path is more honest than that taken by many knights. And, in spite of his time aboard ship, Fletch has lost none of the abilities of diplomacy required of the nobility, and is quite capable of dropping the “longshoreman” exterior when circumstances demand it.
